Veteran Manchester United defender Gary Neville has announced his retirement from the game with immediate effect. Neville joined United in 1991 and demonstrated his loyalty to the club and the manager as he stayed with them for 20 years. He came through the ranks with other legends in the game such as Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes and was famously part of the 1992 FA Cup Youth trophy winning team. The 36-year-old has played a 602 games for the club but never known for his goal scoring ability nailed seven goals during that period. His lack of goals were certainly made up by his collection of silverware which we won over the years.Neville can boost winning the Champions League, eight Premier League trophies, three FA Cups, two League Cups, the Intercontinental Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. He became United club captain in 2005.
At international level his record was just as impressive winning 85 caps for England between 1995 and 2007, playing in two World Cups, (1998 and 2006) and three European Championships (1996, 2000 and 2004).Gary Neville was great player also known for his temper on the pitch which did earn him the occasional yellow card...Neville always dreamed of playing for United and he did so with flying colours.
Today when calls it a day to his career, we salute the legend for all he has done for the club and hope that he would back up young prodigies such as the blazing Rafael who has really stepped up his game this season , taking the ball all the way from his position to the centre of the attacking box.Thank you Gary for all the amazing moments in football that you gave United fans. You are a true inspiration. After much deliberation Neville told the official club site: "I have been a Manchester United fan all my life and fulfilled every dream I've ever had."
